Prejudice

I am prejudiced.

Against stupid people.

Well, not actually stupid people as such, but against those who resist knowledge and learning.

I have this, let’s say ‘friend’ who frequently asks me about the world. About Cold War history, about the European economic situation, about languages. And I freely share what I know. After all, these are things I’ve studied and are the sorts of topics I like discussing.

The conversations though are all one way. I do all the talking. And it’s not because I want to. But because they have so little knowledge they have zero to contribute. At first, I was okay with that. But later, I noticed this person avoids any sort of news or documentaries when watching TV. They prefer instead to watch mindless sitcoms, or reality TV shows.

And last week, something else about them hit me. They own no books. In their house is no reading material of more substance than a ‘Woman’s Weekly’ magazine (of which there are copious issues).

Is it bad that I look on such people with contempt? That they’re некультурный? Untermenschen?
